I think that school should start after Labor Day to allow families to spend the last weekend of summer toether with out home work. I also think that one of the vacations should be eliminated to allow the kids to get out earlier in June. There are too many vacations.

Our schools do a great job within an enormously complicated set of constraints -- time, money, funded and unfunded mandates. We should not add unnecessarily to these constraints. As long as families have the schedule in advance, we can plan vacations around it.

Tell the State to butt out, we have had enough of the State getting into local issues, just as we have with the federal government infringing on states rights.
The Towns and Regional School Districts are more than capable of making decisions that are right for their communities without the Intrusion of the State of Connecticut.
I think each individual school or district should be allowed to decide. Consider the years we have adapted our school schedule to fit building projects and other issues in town. I think each town/district should be allowed to be responsive their own communities.

School boards across the state know the parameters and constraints of their individual towns. Here in Durham/Middlefield we chose to give students Durham Fair Day off for example. It is nice that they have the freedom to do this kind act for our community. This year it was nice that we could start school after Labor Day because it was the earliest Labor Day can ever occur, September 1st. If we mandated an after Labor Day start we could have to wait until September 7th! That would delay our start by a week. Students in our district are rested and ready to get back into their routines the last few days of August. Ask them if they are willing to lose a week in June for that week at the end of August! (In my opinion June is the best month of the year when lots of family events such as weddings, anniversaries, and graduations abound. Having school last until June 28th is nearly unbearable in my opinion. The students are tired. The teachers are tired. And the beautiful weather acts as a huge distractor.

There are numerous good reasons posted in this string by a number of people. However, a statement that the teachers and students are tired at the end of the year is really nothing to consider here. Kids are young and physically strong enough to make it through the 180- days/yr. And teachers have 2 1/2 straight months off (along with all the other vacation during the school year) that should give them ample rest. Most people (including many Seniors today) have the occasional weekly vacation during the year (with never anything approaching 2 1/2 straight months). The rest of society is able to drag themselves through the day...after day...after day.
