Wrestlers, gymnasts to enter Southington Hall of Fame

SOUTHINGTON — Southington High School’s 1978 wrestling team and 2005 gymnastics team have been tabbed for induction into the Southington Sports Hall of Fame.

The 1978 grapplers won Southington’s only state team championship, while the 2005 gymnasts swept the CIAC Class L and Open championships before winning the New England Open, launching a dynasty in the process.

These two teams are at the leading edge of the Southington’s Class of 2013, the fourth since the town’s Sports Hall of Fame was established in 2010. This year’s individual inductees will be announced a later date.

“Our committee believes that this class is as worthy as our previous induction classes,” said Hall of Fame Committee Chairman Dennis J. Stanek, Jr.

The 1978 Southington wrestling team, which went 17-0 in only its fourth season, featured Jon Smith (105 pounds) and John Sperry (132), who won Class LL individual titles. The Blue Knights also hit the mat with the likes of Joe Fernandes (98), Steve Fernandes (119), Jeff Lee (126), Jack DeGarmo (138) and Matt Florian (155).

The 2005 Southington High School gymnastics team featured all-around champ Kristy Dougan, vault champ Jessica Gianatti and floor champ Yvette Mirando.

“There’s no doubt that both teams are among the best in the town’s history,” said Stanek.

The 2013 induction ceremony will be held at the Aqua Turf Club on Thursday Nov. 14. Tickets are $50 and will be available soon. Call Jim Verderame at (860) 628-7335 to reserve.
