Should farmers obtain the right to shoot domestic dogs if on their property?
I've been threatened by 3 local farmers that they will shoot my dog if it enters their yards. Well, my dog (my best friend and trusty companion) has now been missing for almost 3 months. Everytime I post a sign around the farmers houses, they're torn down. I've spent thousands of dollars trying to find my beloved 7 years old Husky. He was everything to me. My family and friends miss him dearly. He was the most lovable dog you'd ever meet. Because he's a husky, he has the passion to run. Unfortunately, they're escape artists too. I've done everything in my power to keep him in my yard, but unfortunately, he got away. All fingers point towards him getting shot.
The law can be misinterpreted and give the farmers room to believe it's ok just to shoot a domestic dog because they "observe" the dog "worrying" livestock.
After speaking with two different State Police officers, it proved my belief that this law needs to be more specific and ammended. As both officers said different things pertaining to this law. I would think better proof of mischievious behavior on the dogs end MUST be provided in order to 1.) shoot the animal 2.) issue tickets to dog owner.
These are old farm towns and it seems the law is just as old. Write to your local and State Representatives asking them to modify this law. I know others in my area have had the same complaints about the same farmers. Something MUST be done to stop the shooting of domestic dogs.

Should Farmers Shoot Dogs on Their Property?
There is a farmer that lets her chickens loose in her yard. They are also in the street in front of her farm all the time. Why do the dogs or wild animals go after her chickens? You tell me. She threatens to kill the dog if it comes back again. Did she? I know of lost dogs in the same area, where do they dissapear too? It is natural for a dog to try to run free. They will even jump electric fences, regular fences, and break chains. They are dogs. I understand calling animal control and have these dogs picked up and have the owners pay for any damage and a fine. The owners of these dogs do not want their dogs doing any of the above and would gladly pay the damage expense. To poison, shoot or kill these dogs is inhumane. I hate to think of the suffering these dogs go through. Remember farmers, they are dogs, not humans. Yes the owners may or may not be at fault, but why take it out on a domestic animal. I read the article about the missing dog. I can relate to this dog owner. It has happened to me. Remember, you can also get arrested for treatening a dog owner on the dog owners property. You have no right to go after the owner with a gun or threatening of any kind. You could be in trouble too for doing this. Lots of dogs or falsly accused because they may have been in some ones yard previously. Have proof it's the same dog before you go threatening these people. Lots of dogs look exactly alike. People will look at a dog missing posting and think it is the dog they saw wandering. In the end it's a different breed or totaly different looking dog.
Farmers shot and killed my sisters dog ! Higginum, Connecticut
After many threats to kill my sisters dog, this 1 local farmer followed through with his threats. Her dogs are just animals, they don't know any better. They escaped the electic fence and where tempted to his farm, what dog wouldn't go to it. Their chickens have free run of the neigborhood. What makes that right? Whenever I go to my sister's I have to go by this farm and the chickens in the road have caused me to almost crash my truck many times. 1 day my sisters dogs jumped the electic fence. She immediately went to the farmers place knowing the dogs would go there to play with the chickens in the street. This is when the nightmare for her began, She found one of her dogs coming back from this farm, which is strange because her dogs never leave eachother. She called animal control, put flyers up immediately hoping a neighbor might find her lost dog. He never was found. State police told my sister to let it go, rumors were that the farmer killed her other dog. What gives him the right to shoot her dog? In my eyes he should have called her and returned the dog, if his chickens ended up in her yard she would have done that for him. Animals have no sense of right or wrong, he does. Sister of broken hearted sister!
